THE OBJECTIVE OF THE UNIVERSITY IN OFFERING STUDENTS ADMISSION

The objective of the University in offering admission to prospective students is to train and produce citizens who will be eligible in learning and character within a stipulated period of time. The program is an avenue through which individual student obtains a University degree that prepares him/her to understand him/herself, obtain a suitable career and contribute meaningfully to the society.

The University has guiding principles, rules and regulations that each student is expected to comply with in order to succeed. The decision to drop out or hang on doggedly throughout the course and graduate as expected will depend on the part each student take from the first day of accepting this admission. If a student wishes to graduate according to the set objective, then he or she should decide to work hard, comply with the rules and regulations and avoid bad influences.
The rules and regulations are used to judge how good or bad you are and the University has zero tolerance for indiscipline.

Norm violating behavior detested by the University
Students exhibit behavior(s) that can negatively affect their academic performance. The University therefore frowns at these behaviors because they disturb the peaceful co-existence of the people in the community and the achievement of University set goals and objectives. To curb this, the University has laid down rules and regulations which every student must comply with if he/she must go through the learning process effectively.

These behaviors include: Cultism, drug addiction, examination malpractices, Stealing, rioting, fighting, impersonation, forgery, indecent dressing, misuse of eletronic gadgets and other offences stipulated in the Students Hand Book.

Any of these misconducts will lead a student to either rustication or expulsion, so avoid them.

Causes of students problems.
The causes of students’ problems or poor performance include the following:
1.  Being over influenced and carried away by the new freedom they found after much guidance and protection by parents at home.
2.  Not realizing the need to learn to plan, set goals early and manage their lives.
3. Assuming that they have the right study habit forgetting that University education is more demanding and needs more improved reading skills.
4.  Not appreciating the benefits in being learned.
5.  Believing that studies are just to satisfy the expectations of the society and parents.

How then do you cope?
Student can adjust positively and cope with the challenges through;
1.    Being Realistic with his/her self-knowledge, setting attainable goals that match his/her personality.
2.    Being able to accept anxiety and to avoid defenses.
3.    Expressing emotion freely but with respect.
4.    Altering goals when they are not attainable without applying defenses.
5.    Postponing satisfaction to attain academic success.
6.    Building frustration tolerance.
7.    Keeping busy with hard work and keeping away from norm violating behavior


STUDENTS’ DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE
When students commit any of these offenses, they are arraigned before the Students Disciplinary Committee for interrogation, and if found guilty, decisions are taken on the type of punishment as stipulated in the Students’ Hand Book.
When a student is invited to face the committee he/she is expected to comply but when such student fails to appear on three notices before the committee, he/she is expelled.

However, students are expected to say the truth they know about such cases as lies can only worsen the situation.

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
Malpractice according to Oxford Learner’s Dictionary is, “a wrong doing or fraudulent practice”.
Examination malpractice is seen as an academic wrong doing or fraudulent practice by students before, during and after an examination.

Causes of Examination Malpractice:
·    General lack of self confidence.
·    Low perceptions of self concept.
·    Negative attitude towards studies.
·    Poor study habit.
·    Inadequate preparation for examination.

Various forms of Examination Malpractice:
·    Impersonation   
·    Bringing micro-chips, note–books, text books or already prepared answers into the     examination hall.
·    Copying from fellow students during examination.
·    Exchange of ideas in examination hall with fellow student.
·    Pepping into another examination sheet to copy answers.
·    Coping from phones and other electronic gadgets

Consequences of Examination Malpractice
A.    Keeps a student perpetually ignorant, inferior and unlearned.
B.    The student will face Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
C.    The student will be disgraced, rusticated or expelled.
D.    He/she will have unfulfilled ambition.
E.    Remains unproductive and useless to self and the sociaety
