Jonathan Jeremiah ATUNGWU is a Professor of Plant Nematology in the Department of Crop Protection, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. He is the current Dean of the College of Plant Science and Crop Production of the University. He holds the Doctor of Philosophy degree of FUNAAB and a Short Course Certificate (Equivalence of Masters’ Degree in Sustainable Agriculture) from Coventry University, UK, in addition to the Certificate programme he successfully completed from China Agricultural University, Beijing. His research work focuses on host plant resistance and organic pest management in tropical agro-ecosystems. Atungwu is a dynamic, enthusiastic and optimistic personality in addition to being driven by his passion for excellence, efficient and effective utilization of resources guided by innovative ideas and implementations of new skills to deliver on the mandates of the University and any other organization he has had course to serve. He is one of the scientists and experts in Nigeria who pioneered organic agriculture movement and development in the country in 2005. He teaches both the undergraduate and graduate students and has successfully supervised and co-supervised more than 20 postgraduate students. He has been involved in curricula development at both national and international levels. He has tremendous leadership experiences, including being a Dean previously during his sabbatical leave at the Lagos State University, Lagos. He has, at one time or the other, being a Director, Deputy Dean, Head of Department, Coordinator, Chairman of Committees/Panels, Principal Investigator, Internal and External Assessor for Professorial Cadre as well as Undergraduate and Graduate External examinations throughout the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
On the professional level, Professor Jonathan Atungwu is the President of the Nigerian Society for Plant Protection (NSPP) and a Chairman or Board of Trustees Member of several organizations, including the Nigerian Society for Plant Protection (NSPP), Network of Biopesticides and Phytomedical Stakeholders, Sahara Farmers’ Foundation, etc. He is the current Secretary of the Association of Deans of Agriculture in Nigeria (ADAN).
On the International scene, Professor Atungwu is a member of the Steering Committee of the West African Network on Organic Agriculture Research and Training. He is also a member of the Biotic Constraints and Food Production Committee of the International Society for Plant Pathology. He was the Course Coordinator of the International Summer School on Organic Agriculture. He has travelled to many countries including UK, China, South Africa, Kenya, Sierra-Leone etc in a bid to enhancing his capacity for research, teaching and training in agriculture.
He has several, prizes, honours, scholarships and numerous commendations/awards, outstanding among which are the FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor’s Productivity Award, International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Fellowship for Ph. D, Staff/Student Mobility Fellowship at Universite D’Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, Benin Republic, United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Federal Government Scholarship, FUNAAB Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies, and Dean’s Honour Roll.
Professor Atungwu who is happily married to and blessed with lovely children, is a disciplinarian who usually ensures highest ethical standards, rule of law, respect and integrity as a leader by example. He is a great mentor for the up and coming agricultural scientist, agro-preneurs and the youths generally.
