Core Project Personnel, Position and Responsibilities
- Dr. Akin Rasheed Popoola (ARP), Plant Pathologist/Biotechnologist, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. Principal Investigator. Conceptualizes the project, designs experiments, directs the research; organises the training sessions; coordinates the collection of soil samples in Nigeria and Ghana; coordinates the collection of tomato germplasms in Nigeria, Ghana and overseas; works with a male trainee researcher in Nigeria on morphological and molecular characterisation of strains of RsFol; works with a female trainee researcher on Identification of resistant loci, development of primers and molecular screening of tomato germplasms for resistance to strains of Rs and races of Fol; works with Mrs. Kaledzi and other breeders on breeding scheme for production of tomato lines with combined resistance to Rs and Fol; supervises marker-assisted selection of tomato lines with combined resistance to Rs and Fol; supervises farmers’ participatory evaluation of tomato lines for resistance to wilt pathogens in wilt-endemic areas of Nigeria and Ghana.

- Dr. J.V.K. Afun (JVKA), Head of Department, Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana. Co-investigator. Coordinates the project at KNUST, Ghana; co-organises the training sessions; supervises the collection of soil samples in Ghana; supervises the collection of tomato germplasms in Ghana; works with Mrs. Kaledzi on breeding scheme for production of tomato lines with combined resistance to Rs and Fol; supervises farmers’ participatory evaluation of tomato lines for resistance to wilt pathogens in wilt-endemic areas of Ghana.
- Mr. E.A. Fadare (EAF), Programme Manager, Ekiti State Agricultural Development Authority, Ikole-Ekiti. Provides link with the tomato growers in Ekiti State; provides background information on previous effort at solving the problems; advices on acceptability of new technology by farmers.
- Dr. (Mrs) D. A. Adegbite (DAA). Liaise with radio and television stations at both Federal and State levels to telecast video tapes on improved agricultural biotechnology aimed at eradicating tomato wilts in southwest Nigeria.
- Mrs. Patience D. Kaledzi (PDK), a Ghanaian and lecturer in the Department of Horticulture, KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana. Provides link with female tomato growers in Ghana. Organises information dissemination of research findings among farmers in Ghana. She is also a breeder. She will actively participate in research component of Training 3 i.e. breeding scheme for production of tomato lines with combined resistance to Rs and Fol.
