The University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) has taken a giant stride towards realizing its dream of topping the University Web Ranking in Nigeria and Africa at large.

In what could be described as an intimidating bold step, the Third Generation University, based on the 2011 World University Web Ranking result rose to Eight (8th) position among seventy-seven (77) Universities in the country that were ranked.

According to the result of the second half of the year 2011 World University Web Ranking, released on 6th July, 2011 by www.41cu.org, one of the ranking bodies, UNAAB was ranked 8th as against 11th in the previous ranking, released in January 2011.

A breakdown of the ranking made available to UNAAB Bulletin by the University’s Coordinator of Webometrics, Dr. Olusegun Folorunsho showed that UNAAB comfortably led other third Generation Universities in the country while it also beats most of the First Generation institutions.

They include University of Port-Harcourt which came 9th and closely trailed UNAAB, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Maiduguri, Bayero University, Kano, Usman Dan Fodio University, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, University of Calabar, among others.

None of the highly expensive private Universities could come near UNAAB in the latest ranking as the only one (Babcock University) which attempted it came a distant 12th position, though it led others in the category.

However, a major upset was recorded in the ranking as the Premier University, University of Ibadan “dethroned” the hitherto reigning University of Ilorin, thus relegating the latter to the second (2nd) position.

UNILORIN is followed  by  Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Jos, Jos, University of Lagos and UNAAB.

Reacting to the ranking at a Senate Luncheon marking the end of the 2010/2011 Academic Session, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun attributed the feat to commitment on the part of the Management and the entire University Community to raising the “Bar of Excellence”.

According to him, “Four (4) years ago we were no where as far as University web ranking was concerned.  I want to thank you all for your contributions”.

“We were hitherto ranked Eleven but we are now ranked Eight, leading other Third Generation Universities and beating most of the First Generation Universities.  We won’t rest on our oars”, he added.
