Nigerians, particularly stakeholders in the sports and wellness sector have been urged to promote the development and growth of sports at the grassroots level, to ensure that the country takes its pride of place among comity of nations. Making this call was Prof. Olanrewaju Ipinmoroti of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, at the 2020 Inter-house Sports Competition of FUNAAB Staff School, Abeokuta. Prof. Ipinmoroti, who was the Chairman of the occasion, commended the University Management for the provision of sports infrastructure in the school, adding that the facilities were second to none. He advised government not to treat sports as second fiddle but handle sporting activities the way it is handling security and economy. He said this can be done by paying conscious attention to sporting activities in schools, by promoting the slogan of ‘catch them young’.
While calling for the involvement of all in sports, Prof. Ipinmoroti believed that the sector was capable of transforming the country’s economy, enhance employment, promote Nigeria’s image and unify the country. In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako congratulated the school on the occasion, assuring them of Management’s continuous support towards making the school a pride to the University. Represented by the Chairman, Committee of Deans and Directors and Dean, College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) of FUNAAB, Prof. Mufutau Atayese, the Vice-Chancellor said he supported developmental initiative in the sports sector; a move which necessitated the repair of the road leading to the school.
He stressed that he had great interest in the school as “Young FUNAABites”, promising that the University Management would do more to ensure that quality students were produced from FUNAAB Staff School. Earlier, the School’s Headteacher, Mrs. Florence Alade, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and his team for their support and encouragement, noting that the repair of the road leading to the school by the current administration is a pointer to the fact that the Vice-Chancellor is a lover of children.
While noting the support of all stakeholders including the parents towards making the sports festival a reality, Mrs. Alade assured that the school would not rest on its oars at producing quality students that would be worthy in character and learning. Four houses; Blue House (Bisi Soboyejo); Green House (Julius Okojie); Orange House (Vice-Chancellor) and Yellow House (‘Nimbe Adedipe House) participated in the sports competition.
Overall results revealed that Yellow House emerged first with 396 points, Orange House came second with 333 points, Green House was third with 308, and Blue House was fourth with 265 points. Meanwhile, officials of the Vice-Chancellor’s House have presented the trophy they won to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako, as the elated Vice-Chancellor thanked the officials and pupils for a job well done and encouraged them to keep the flag flying.
