VC Clocks Three Years in Office

On Wednesday, November 1, 2017, the Sixth Substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, assumed office. The Don, Felix Kolawole Salako, is a renowned Professor of Soil Physics and Fellow of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (FSSSN).

He joined the services of the University in the year 2000 as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science and Land Management, formerly Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Mechanisation. Aside teaching courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he had supervised more than 50 undergraduate projects and more than 30 postgraduate theses. He was Acting Head of Department from February 2001 to December 2006. He became a Professor of Soil Physics in 2006 and he has to his credit, more than 90 publications in learned journals, book chapters, conference proceedings and technical re-ports.

He was re-appointed as HOD, between January and March 2008 after a year of sabbatical leave at the University of Venice, Italy. In March 2008, he was appointed the Director, Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC), a position he held till March 2011 and became the Pioneer Director, Community Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS) from March 2011 to September 2011 before becoming the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) in September 2011 and eventually spent two-terms of two years each, till December 2015.Prof. Salako was listed in Marquis Who-is-Who in Science and Engineering, Eighth Edition, 2005-2006 for Out-standing Achievements.

He has won many research-support grants, which included the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and the Training and Research in Italian Laboratories (TRIL) of the Abdus Salaam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy and from 2016 to 2020, the Vice-Chancellor actively participated in the African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) as the Southwest Coordinator, under the auspices of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Oyo State and was one-time Associate Editor, Journal of Soil and Water Conservation, Iowa, United States of America, among others.

When he applied to be the Sixth Substantive Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Salako developed a template to guide his actions. One was on his own vision and mission, titled “Excellence cannot be compromised”, where he stated his core values bordering on respect for humanity and society; integrity; justice and fair play; productivity; and harmony without com-promising discipline; while the other aspect is his 12-point agenda, which he had followed religiously.

With the full support of the Governing Council, Management, Staff, Students and in-deed all stakeholders, FUNAAB has witnessed remarkable achievements in the last three years in every ramification, covering academics, research, administration, infrastructural development, internationalisation, staff and students welfare, industrial relations, community engagements, and the enthronement of peace and security on campus, among others.
