Don Advocates Retention of Retired Professors

A Professor in the Department of Pure and Applied Botany, Prof. Mukaila Kadiri has canvassed for the retention of Professors as ‘Adjunct Professors’ to alleviate the shortage of manpower and assist with postgraduate supervision.

            Prof. Kadiri made this call while delivering his Appreciation Speech at the Send forth ceremony, held in his honour by the Department of Pure and Applied Botany (PAB), College of Biosciences, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).

            The Celebrant who was from the defunct College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS) advised the Department and the University by extension to adopt the system of retaining retired Professors on their list as ‘Adjunct Professors’ pointing out that this will help reduce the problem of shortage of staff often encountered at Departmental level.

            According to him, the system is popularly practised in the North where it has enhanced postgraduate supervision, teaching of foundational 100 level courses as well as assisted in the production of Ph.D holders in the Department.

            He expressed gratitude to his Department, College and the University at large for the honour bestowed on him.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale in his Address congratulated Prof. Kadiri for successfully retiring from the service of the University and expressed appreciation for his immense contributions to his Department, College and the University in general.

            In his Address, the Dean, College of Biosciences, Prof. Oluwaseyi Akinloye appreciated Prof. Kadiri for being selfless, a good manager of men and resources and a good team player.

Prof. Akinloye who revealed that Prof. Kadiri had been a Professor for over twenty-two years and was the former Dean of the defunct College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS) noted that the Department would miss his fatherly contributions, innovations and wealth of experience.

Corroborating him, the Head of the Department, PAB, Dr. ‘Biodun Oyelakin in his Address also appreciated the celebrant for being a good mentor to his colleagues, subordinates and students, adding that he is fondly called ‘Baba’ for his wealth of experience.

Dr. Oyelakin stated that the Department was lucky to have produced Prof. Kadiri as the 1st indigenous Professor from the defunct College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS), a 2 time Head of Department of defunct Biological Sciences from where the Department of Pure and Applied Botany was carved out; and a former Dean of College of Natural Sciences from where the present  College of  Biosciences was also carved out.

            The Deputy Dean, of the College, Prof. Kehinde Ademolu, Director, Academic Planning, Prof. Iyabode Kehinde, students and well wishers of the celebrant all  eulogised  him for being a jolly good fellow, father and friend.
