It was a moment of unending emotional and heart-touching tributes in honour of former Head of Public Relations of the University, Mrs. Adesumbo Aderonke Laniyan, during the Commendation Service organized in her honour by the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Association of Nigeria Universities Professional Administrators (ANUPA).
Mrs. Laniyan was remembered as a loving, caring and dedicated person during her lifetime. Describing her in the condolence letter sent to the Vice-Chancellor, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Adamu Rasheed, stated that late Mrs. Laniyan was a dutiful officer, active and vocal even at her last post of duty in the Service Compact with all Nigerians (SERVICOM).
The Deputy Registrar I, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Dawodu, who delivered the Executive Secretary’s condolence letter stated that, the “Late Mrs. Laniyan was a kind, gentle and dutiful officer who made immense contributions to the work of SERVICOM Unit in the University as well as NUC SERVICOM Committee of which she was a valuable and active member”.
Delivering the University Management’s tribute, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, stated that University Management would not abandon the relationship with the family of the deceased, noting that the death of Mrs. Laniyan came as a shock to the entire University Community.
He described the deceased as a hard-working woman who served with great passion, noting that she served at various units in the University. The Vice-Chancellor said that the late Mrs. Laniyan was a good team player who gave her best to the university.
Speaking on behalf of the Registry, the Registrar, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola, in his tribute described her as a diligent worker, who could handle assignments without supervision and come up with the best result. He confirmed that Mrs. Laniyan was a passionate registry officer, who acquired rich experiences over the years of working.
Speaking for the family, her son, Mr. Damilare Laniyan observed that his mother lived a life of “Live and lets live”, noting that his mother was an administrator per excellence. He described her as a conflict manager, who always avoided quarrelling with people.
In his words of exhortation, Mr. Omowon Agbotoba, affirmed that nobody has control over his or her life, except Almighty God. He said God created man and He can take him away when He feels.
Mr. Agbotoba admonished everybody to do good because nobody knows when God may take someone’s life. He noted that it is an inevitable call, that nobody can resist when it is time, adding that Mrs. Laniyan fought the good fight.
