COURSE SYNOPSIS:
The role of production engineering in the mechanical engineering profession. Mechanics and kinematics of machine tools. Tool geometry and chip formation. Mechanics of cutting with single-point tools. Merchant’s analysis. Other theories. Economics of cutting. Variables affecting metal removal rate, economic cutting speeds, cutting tool materials , cutting fluids. Principles of metal cutting with multi-point tools: milling, grinding, drilling, boring, etc. Time and cost estimates.
