(GIYD)

Mandate

The mandate of the Gender Issues and Youth Development (GIYD) Programme, is to enhance participatory capabilities of women, farm-families and youths in the development of themselves, their families, communities and nation at large.

The GIYD Programme aspires to become a Centre of excellence for Gender and Youth Development in South-western Nigeria.

Sub-programmes

  • Family Health and Nutrition Education;
  • Adult Literacy;
  • Career-building, Vocational Training and Economic Empowerment;
  • Youth Development;
  • Women-In-Agriculture, Processing and Utilization of Food Produce; and
  • Gender Issues and General Family Welfare.

 Goal

The Gender Issues and Youth Development Programme (GIYD) focuses on women specific issues, gender issues (Gender Sensitive and Gender-Specific Projects for females and males) and youth development issues.

Objectives

  1. To alleviate poverty and enhance income-generating capacities of farm-family members;
  2. To develop strategies for the promotion of boy- and girl-children development;
  3. To promote and maintain farm-family health through the Farm-Family Health Project (FFAHEP);
  4. To develop the capacities of rural women in the financial management of self-help revolving loan schemes and promotes banking habits;
  5. To transfer post-harvest technologies (food processing, preservation, utilization and storage as well as the required knowledge and advice in the marketing of the products) to farm-families;
  6. Enhancement of income generating capacities of beneficiaries through the development of vocational and entrepreneurial skills;
  7. To promote linkages between farm-families and collaborative agencies;
  8. To add value to Agricultural Products of farm-families;
  9. To improve the nutritional status of In-school Youths and farm-families; and
  10. To empower adult learners (males and females) with the ability to read, write, calculate and communicate in English language.

 Activities

  • Development and Implementation of gender-sensitive and gender-specific programmes;
  • Promotion and maintenance of Farm-Family Health and Nutritional status through the Farm-Family Health Project (FFAHEP) and FUNAAB Nutrition Education Project (FUNEP);
  • On-Campus Capacity Building Training Workshop on Vocational and Skill-Acquisition for women and youths in the University extension mandate areas;
  • Poverty Alleviation through improvement of livelihood status and enhancement of farm-families income generating capabilities through the development of various forms of skills;
  • Establishment of Adult Literacy Centres in AMREC’s Extension Villages;
  • Develop strategies for the promotion of boy-and-girl children development through FUNAAB Youth Development (FUNAAB Y-D) Project;
  • Transfer of proven post-harvest technologies of agricultural produce (value addition utilization and storage) as well as the required knowledge and advice in the marketing of the products;
  • Awareness creation on gender and developmental issues in the University extension mandate area; and
  • Promotion of gender sensitivity and marital issues amongst farm families and FUNAAB staff.
