Short Profile

Prof. J. A. Olanite was born on the 14th of March 1963 at Iko village in a suburb of Ayetotro town in the then Egbado (now Yewa) North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. He started his education career in 1969 at Local Authority Primary School Ketu but was transferred, when he was in primary six, to Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School Ayetoro in 1974 by the then Egbado District Education Authority due to the very few number of pupils in the class. He was returned to primary four in the new school and he graduated in 1976.

He was admitted to Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo Mushin Lagos in 1977 and graduated in 1982. He gained admission to the then newly established Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye in November 1982 (as a pioneer student) to study Agriculture where he graduated with B. Agric. (Animal Production) in 1987. After the compulsory National Youth Service Corps programme with the Christlieb Farms Limited, Ilorin (a subsidiary company of Christlieb PLC, Apapa Lagos) in December 1988, he was employed as a Farm Superintendent by the company in June 1989 where he rose to Assistant Farm Manager in 1992. While in the services of the company, he was admitted for postgraduate programme in 1990 at the University of Ilorin graduating with M.Sc. in Crop Production in 1993.

He was offered a Graduate Fellowship position by the then International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA), Ethiopia, now (International Livestock Research Institute, ILRI) in June 1994 to do a Doctoral Research for the award of Ph.D. in Pasture Agronomy at the Hohenheim University Germany. However, because of the political situation in Nigeria at that time, the fellowship was to be cancelled or anchored in a Nigerian University. The fully funded Ph.D. programme which was then anchored at the Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan was completed in July 2003.

Prof. Olanite joined the services of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in February 1998 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Pasture and Range Management and was promoted Professor of Pasture Agronomy and Forage Utilization in October 2014. He has served as two times Acting Head of Department since 2009 and has been the substantive Head since January 2017.
