Short Profile

Dr. Takeet research effort has been in the area of Veterinary Parasitology with the main focus on the diagnosis of parasitic infections and molecular characterization of parasites of Veterinary and medical importance. He has been actively involved in the use of conventional and molecular techniques for the detection, identification and characterization of parasites of veterinary and medical importance in cattle, sheep, goats, horses, dogs and poultry as well as the genetic bases of resistance to parasitic infection in goats and poultry. Dr. Takeet teaches basic and advanced parasitology.

Research Focus

The major interest of his research work is to determine the genetic diversity of tropical and neglected parasitic protozoans using novel in vitro DNA amplification and sequencing techniques with major thrust in the molecular detection and characterization of group of apicomplexa protozoans such as Trypanosoma species, Babesia rossi, Ehrlichia canis, Theileria equi, Ehrlichia ruminantium by amplification, sequencing and sequences analysis of Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS-1), 18S ribosomal Ribonucleic Acid (18S rRNA), heat Shock Protein (pCS20) and 16S ribosoma Ribonucleic Acid (16S rRNA) genes. Other areas of research interest are determination of transmission dynamics and pattern of parasitic diseases at the rural-urban interface.

Teaching Focus

Dr. Takeet teaches Veterinary Parasitology at basic (VPR 312, 401, 402, 404) and advanced undergraduates and graduate levels, respectively. In the basic Parasitology, students learn the basic biology of parasites of veterinary and medical importance as well as various detection and diagnostic techniques for adequate treatment and control of the diseases cause by such parasites. At advanced level, graduate students are exposed to advanced research methodologies to enhance their specialization in a focused area of aspects of Veterinary Parasitology.
