The African Academy of Sciences (AAS), has shortlisted the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) as a hosting institution for the Climate Impact Research Capacity and Leadership Enhancement (CIRCLE), Sub-Saharan African Programme. The shortlisting was communicated to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole by the Acting Head, Department of Water Resources Management and Agrometerology, Dr. Gideon Ufoegbune.
Dr. Ufoegbune said the objectives of the programme include strengthening research capacity in Sub-saharan African research institutions to support early career researchers by developing coordinated and strategic approach to climate change research; strengthening the capacity of African researchers to undertake research on climate change as well as strengthening the capacity of African Academy of Sciences (AAS) to set and implement research programmes based on credible peer-review processes.
In another development, the University has received delegates from the National Universities Commission (NUC) Board on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), who paid an inspection visit to the University, to ascertain its level of compliance with the directive on use of ICT in classrooms and lecture theatre in the University.
Receiving the team, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole appreciated NUC for its interest and for supporting the University with ICT facilities to make its classrooms up-to-date to meet the world-class standard. He assured the team that the Special Board that was awarded to it by the NUC had been put to good use. He informed delegates that the University had been enjoying the support of the Nigerian Communications Commission, with a donation of 109 laptops last year and another donation of 110 this year. , the NUC Board’s Chairman, Engr. John Ayere, stressed the importance of ICT in education saying it is “a central engine to drive Nigeria’s transformation to a knowledge-based economy”.
He pointed out that a robust ICT was capable of creating wealth, jobs and entrepreneurs and assured the University of the Board’s willingness to support the growth of ICT in the University.
